Challenge: Creative Loafing wanted to launch a new culture blog that set itself apart visually from CL’s current blogs. After speaking with the blog’s editor, we decided on a title: PopSmart and wanted a logo and header that fit the nomenclature the name implies.
Solution: Whenever I think of Pop art, I immediately identify Warhol or Lichtenstein. With that in mind I wanted to create an image that is both comical, and stylized. I drew my first draft and decided to make the central characters diverse – a nod to Lichtenstein’s love of pulp imagery but allowing the opportunity to have some diversity added to the illustration.
